Passportz & Pagez Ghana 2025: A Journey of Books, Culture & Belonging
For our very first international destination, Passportz & Pagez chose the heart of West Africa —
Ghana. Drawn by its rich cultural heritage and powerful literary history, we selected Homegoing
by acclaimed Ghanaian-American author Yaa Gyasi as our community read. The novel, which
traces the journeys of two half-sisters and their descendants across generations in Ghana and
America, offered a profound lens through which to explore identity, history, and home. With
pages turned and hearts prepared, we set out to experience the land that shaped this
unforgettable story.
Day 1 – Arrival in Accra
We departed Nairobi filled with excitement, finally stepping into the world we had read about
for months. Upon arrival at Kotoka International Airport, we were welcomed with warm smiles
and true Ghanaian hospitality. The day continued with a smooth check-in at the luxurious fivestar Labadi Beach Hotel, where comfort met coastal beauty. We closed our first evening with an
elegant dinner at Zen Gardens, Accra, setting the tone for a journey that promised culture,
connection, and memorable experiences.
Day 2 – Royal Heritage & Cultural Welcome
Our day began with a breathtaking royal Ghanaian photoshoot, as members were adorned in
vibrant kente cloth, the sacred textile of the Akan people, traditionally reserved for royalty and
significant ceremonies. Each pattern and colour told a story of history, pride, and identity,
making the moment both symbolic and unforgettable. The evening unfolded into a beautiful
welcome dinner at Belle Afrik, shared with sponsors, partners, and government officials. It
became a celebration of culture, unity, and meaningful connection — a powerful start to our
immersion into Ghana’s rich social and cultural fabric
Day 3 – Independence, Legacy & Literary Exchange
We began the day at Black Star Square, also known as Independence Square, where Ghana’s freedom was declared. Standing beneath the iconic Black Star, a symbol of African unity and hope, we reflected on the resilience that shaped the nation. Our visit to the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum offered a powerful moment of reflection on the legacy of Ghana’s first President and his vision for a united, self-reliant Africa.
Later that evening, we had the honor of having our book review with the First Ladies Book Club Ghana. What followed was a night of meaningful conversation, shared insights, warm networking, and vibrant cultural exchange — a truly special moment that beautifully blended literature, leadership, and community.
Day 4 – Cape Coast: History, Memory & Reflection
Before sunrise, we journeyed to Cape Coast, first stopping at Anomabo’s Heroes Memorial
Garden of Return, established during Ghana’s Year of Return. There, we honoured great figures
such as Dr. James Aggrey, Nana Amonu IV, and George Ekem Ferguson, whose legacies shaped
education, leadership, and national borders. From the peaceful coastline, we proceeded to Cape
Coast Castle — the emotional heart of Homegoing. Walking through the dungeons and standing
before the Door of No Return was a deeply moving experience, as history, literature, and lived
reality collided. It was a moment of silence, reflection, and collective remembrance
Day 5 – Rest, Shopping & Coastal Bliss
After days rich with history and learning, our members enjoyed a relaxed day to shop, unwind,
and soak in the beauty of Accra. From local markets to beach walks at Labadi, it was a time for
laughter, souvenirs, and quiet moments of gratitude before preparing for the journey home.
Day 6 – Farewell Ghana
With hearts full and memories deeply etched, we departed Ghana and safely returned to
Nairobi. What began as a book had become an experience — one that connected us to people,
places, and stories in the most meaningful way.
Conclusion
Our Ghana 2025 trip marked the very first Passportz & Pagez travel experience, and it exceeded
every expectation. Rated 9/10 by our members, the journey beautifully blended literature,
culture, history, and community. From royal heritage to emotional reflection, from elegant
dinners to powerful conversations, Ghana welcomed us as more than visitors — it welcomed us
home. This unforgettable beginning has set the foundation for many more journeys where
books and borders continue to meet
